How to Get to Maasin City: Flights, Ferries and Buses
Maasin City sits on the west coast of Southern Leyte, and getting there is part of the adventure. Whether you’re coming from Cebu, Manila or elsewhere in the Visayas, here are your main options.
By sea: ferry from Cebu
Maasin has a seaport with regular ferry connections to Cebu City. Both overnight roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels and faster passenger craft make the crossing, making this a popular route for travellers already in Cebu. Book ahead on weekends and holidays, and confirm schedules with the shipping lines before you travel.
By air: via Tacloban or Ormoc
Maasin has no commercial airport, so most air travellers fly into one of two gateways:
- Tacloban (Daniel Z. Romualdez Airport) — the largest airport in the region, with daily flights from Manila and Cebu. From Tacloban, continue to Maasin by bus or van (roughly 3–4 hours).
- Ormoc — reachable by fast ferry from Cebu; from Ormoc it’s about 2–3 hours overland to Maasin.
By land: bus and van
Air-conditioned buses and vans (locally called “V-hire”) link Maasin with Tacloban, Ormoc, Sogod and other towns across Leyte and Southern Leyte. Terminals are easy to find and departures run through the day.
Getting around once you arrive
Within the city, tricycles and multicabs cover short distances cheaply. For beaches, waterfalls or island jump-off points, arrange a habal-habal (motorcycle) or a private van. See the map to plan routes, and browse local services if you need transport or a guide.
Tips for a smooth trip
- Travel light — RoRo and van space is limited.
- Carry cash; ATMs exist in the city but are scarce along the coast and islands.
- Confirm ferry schedules a day ahead, especially in the rainy season.
